Reminiscing on the good times we had at BrisStyle Create + Connect 2021

Last month on Friday, March 26th, Angela and I headed north for the BrisStyle Create + Connect 2021 conference, held at Lightspace Brisbane.

Back after the highly successful launch in 2020, Create + Connect somewhat defied all odds with this full-day conference, featuring a combination of presentations and interactive panel discussions and hosted by Kirsten Devitt.

The conferenced focused on the subject of resilience in arts practices and the importance of connecting with our community, themes that were highly emotional and inspiring, especially after the year we had.

Kirsten Devitt Each to Own

Beyond the rich content presented on stage, BrisStyle operations manager Belinda Harris and her team, Elenor and Kate, filled the day with other delightful touches, such as goal setting wall, live painting from The Artful Grimmer, allergen-friendly eats by Ab Fab catering, and an Instagram feature wall to capture memories.

Back by popular demand, Kirsten Devitt from the prolific label Each To Own emceed the day and warmed up the already beaming audience ahead of first speaker Delvene Cockatoo-Collins. Jimmy Patch was also back, scribing each of the presentations and discussions throughout the day, which may or may not have made us a little nervous!

We first joined Kirsten on the stage as part of the panel Resilience: Harnessing resilience and growth for your business where we sat along side Rachel Burke, and Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, which, hello, “pinch me” moment!

Angela and I then presented our keynote A practical guide to building a resilient business, which focused on risk management for small maker businesses, including optimising your website and setting up that all-important Email Marketing channel.

Jemica from Meekz Contemporary Jewellery summed up the seminar by saying “That was great! You scared the shit out of us, but we needed it.” Perhaps not exactly our intention… but glad to have made an impact!

After lunch we then enjoyed two panels, Sew much to talk about, presented by Peppermint magazine and Connection: Staying connected and creative in times of challenge. Both panels were rich in inspirational content and reminded us of the therapeutic nature of our craft projects.

Last, but certainly not least, the insta-famous Rachel Burke took to the stage alongside Kirsten Devitt in a candid discussion about business, craft, making, art, parenting, and partnerships. Once we stopped being distracted by Rachel’s sparkling handmade jacket, we soaked up all the goodness while wishing that the day wasn’t close to an end!

BrisStyle Create + Connect conference was once again a much-needed day of inspiration during a time that has been tough for so many. We would like to say a huge congratulations and massive thanks to Belinda for selflessly organising and hosting an event of this size and scale and, of course, to her extended team of helpers and members who made us feel so welcome. A special shoutout to Eleanor for her vivacious energy and for keeping our spirits high!

If you’re loving the photos of the event as much as we are, you can view the entire album over on Facebook, captured by Rachel Kimberley who did not stop moving and snapping all day! What a legend!

We would also like to send out a huge thanks to all of those who attended the conference and shared their support with us on the day, or online. To be received with such warmth and support from our community means so very much to us, and reinforces to us that we are on the right track with our mission; to support the maker community of Australia.

Thank you BrisStyle!
